<![CDATA[Brexit - what will it mean for the Occupational Safety and Health industry in the UK?]]> http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postbrexit-what-will-it-mean-for-the-occupational-safety-and-health-industry-in-the-uk http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postbrexit-what-will-it-mean-for-the-occupational-safety-and-health-industry-in-the-uk Fri, 12 Aug 2016 00:00:00 GMT This market has been based on European Directives for over 25 years and those in the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) market have shaped and resourced their businesses around these rules and requirements. The decision of the UK to leave the EU came just 2 months after the new PPE Regulation 2016/425 came “into force” and it becomes “applicable” in this country on the 21st of April 2018 well before any Brexit, regardless of when Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is invoked.

The official word is that until the UK ceases to be a member of the EU, we will adopt EU legislation as normal. This is not an unexpected official position as to do otherwise would not be legal.

It is believed the users and commercial operators in the UK PPE market will wish to adhere to the Regulation as it has become the norm with product platforms, product performances and international supply chains built around it. The preparations necessary to comply with the new Regulation were always going to present challenges and the referendum result will not help.

Though not without its problems in certain areas the PPE market which is an international market, works and it is thought that the UK will continue to recognise the legislation and that the safety of the UK workforce is not compromised.

<![CDATA[Working at height - Still a killer]]> http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postworking-at-height-still-a-killer http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postworking-at-height-still-a-killer Fri, 12 Aug 2016 00:00:00 GMT We still see preventable accidents occuring in the work place which result in serious injury or a fatality.....

If you are working at height (e.g. on a roof, a scaffold or just off your mates back), using a fall arrest system is essential to minimise the risk of injury or worse.Fall arrest systems are a collection of equipment conforming to the required standards ,used in conjunction with each other to ensure the safety of a worker.A simple way to remember the core components are ABCD
A=Anchorage to a secure point of attachment for the fall arrest system
B=Body support where a full body harness will provide a connection point for the worker to the fall arrest system
C=Connectors used to connect the full body harness to the anchorage point - this could be a lanyard or self-retracting life line.
D=Decent or rescue of a fallen worker

We aim to supply a fall arrest system for every budget - whether you need a cost-effective means of keeping yourself safe or a heavy-duty winch/block from the very highest end of the market.
We can provide advise in helping you select the appropriate system for your job

But it’s important to be kind to your feet and take care of them before problems arise. And to treat existing problems before they limit your ability to function. It goes without saying that good foot health is important if your job demands that you be on your feet for any significant amount of time.
A foot that has the wrong support or that slides backwards and forwards inside the shoe is easily over strained as a result of which the individual tenses up.In time this can cause injuries to the knees ,hips and bacvk

Through on-going product development, in-depth materials know-how and advanced research collaborations, C R Safety are offering a free consultation of the JALAS foot stop scanner.
The scanner records the measurements of your feet, the arch and the pressure load points in a few seconds.
You get the result immediately on the display
The display shows how and where your feet are under load, as well as whether you have a low, medium or high arch.
JALAS insoles and safety footwear are the most technically advanced safety shoes on the market.

.We are more than happy to come on site at a time suits your needs to test and measure as many members of staff as necessary, there is no obligation to buy the products as we feel it is our duty to help keep your feet safe and healthy.

Their mission is not only to support families who have endured SBS but to to raise awareness of Short Bowel Syndrome throughout the UK and ensure up-to-date reliable information is available for everyone to access.

Through fundraising and public donation, our long term aim is to provide, where needed, some financial support to families with children suffering from SBS. This could be in the form of a grant for small items of equipment, materials, or clothing. These small grants could make a Big difference to families with small babies and children with SBS, particularly those needing long term hospitalisation, following major surgery.

When funds allow, we also intend to support reasearch into better treatments for children suffering Ultra-Short Bowel Syndrome which hopefully will alleviate the need for bowel transplants in the future.

Your feet bear the brunt of your daily working life

Every year, 2 million sick days are lost due to lower limb disorders, and many of these sick days could be prevented by simply: • wearing the right footwear for the job; • following an appropriate daily foot care programme.

Work related foot problems

We all know that regular maintenance and a yearly MOT is vital to keep a car running smoothly, yet most of us overlook how important it is to care for our feet. Hidden away in shoes, we don’t give them much thought. Standing for long periods may cause pain or discomfort to the feet, ankles, knees and hips, as well as to the back and neck. Also, standing for long periods in unsuitable footwear may exacerbate any underlying problem you may have with your joints, increasing the rate at which arthritic changes take place.

Accidents at work In an at-risk environment, unprotected feet are at risk from accident and injury such as puncture wounds, crushing and laceration, sprained ankles, chemical burns, fractures

The knowledge we have accumulated since 1916 from making sports shoes, ski boots and safety shoes, is all applied to what we do today. The JALAS® last has adapted over the course of our long history to become a perfectly shaped foundation to provide comfort and well-being for your feet. We honour our history. And we are proud of our DNA.

<![CDATA[Breathe Freely – Preventing Occupational Lung Disease in the Construction Industry]]> http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postbreathe-freely-preventing-occupational-lung-disease-in-the-construction-industry http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postbreathe-freely-preventing-occupational-lung-disease-in-the-construction-industry Wed, 22 Jul 2015 00:00:00 GMT t’s no secret that construction workers are at high risk of contracting lung disease from the work that they do. In 2015, approximately 3,500 will die from occupational cancer caused by past exposure to asbestos, another 500 will die from exposure to silica dust and in addition, 5,500 new cases of occupational cancer will be reported. Furthermore, today alone, an unknown but significant number will breathe in the hazardous substances that may eventually lead to serious ill health and may even be fatal. What is less well known is that there’s a solution: most of these industrial diseases can be prevented – by recognising the real hazards, evaluating the risks of being exposed to them, and then effectively controlling those exposures.

BOHS is working in partnership with the HSE, Mace, Land Securities and Constructing Better Health, with sponsorship from Speedy Services, on ‘Breathe Freely’. This is a collaborative initiative which is providing free information, resources and signposting to the advice and expertise we know is needed to help raise standards and keep them high.

What will you get from attending?

You will hear from speakers from BOHS and industry who will enlighten you on:

 • The scale of the problem – and who’s at risk
 • An overview of the main hazards, how to identify them and importantly, how they should be controlled
 • Practical advice and tools to take away and use in the workplace to help improve standards in how worker health is being protected
 • Information about good practice and case studies from across the sector
 • An overview of the related disciplines of occupational hygiene, occupational health and wellbeing – how they can/should fit together

Cost: This event is free to attend. Places are limited so book your place as soon as possible and tell colleagues you think might be interested too!

Date : Wednesday, September 9, 2015

<![CDATA[The risk posed by electricity on the rail network is made clear by Network Rail’s Life Saving Rules]]> http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postthe-risk-posed-by-electricity-on-the-rail-network-is-made-clear-by-network-rails-life-saving-rules http://www.crsafety.co.uk/news/postthe-risk-posed-by-electricity-on-the-rail-network-is-made-clear-by-network-rails-life-saving-rules Tue, 23 Jun 2015 00:00:00 GMT Three rules deal specifically with electricity:

1 Never assume equipment is
isolated - always test before touch,

2 Always test before applying earths or

3 Always be sure the required plans and permits are in place before
you start a job or go on, or near, the line.

The consequences of not following these steps when working around 25 kV
overhead lines is obvious. But even when all the rules are followed, accidents
can occur. Equipment failure is another real risk.

The majority of orange fire resistance (FR) workwear being used on the rail
network today does not comply with the relevant high visibility standard,
even though they include silver reflective tape in the EN configuration. Most
flat orange garments are manufactured using an FR treatment, which is not
permanent, meaning the wearer has no way of knowing how flame retardant
their clothing continues to be.

Two new products

Combat Coverall and Combat Trouser are flame retardant, antistatic
and electric arc protective. But unlike many other brands, wearers can
be confident that Pulsarail clothing will always protect them from potential
workplace hazards.
Using a patented Protex multi-fibre blend - Protal 5, the range has a 16 Cal/
cm2 ATPV rating, virtually double the performance of the next market-leading
fabric. Combined with the Xcelcius Electric Arc Base Layers, the level of
protection increases to 42.6 Cal/cm2.
Some of the benefits of Protal 5 include excellent breathability and wicking
properties, as well as an enhanced electric arc performance because of its
ability to shed the metal electrodes from an arc blast. When welding, it sheds
sparks and molten metal, extending the life expectancy of the coverall.

The Xcelcius Electric Arc Base Layers are manufactured from a knitted Protal
- blend and comply with EN11612
(FR), EN1149 (AST) and IEC61482 (Arc) standards. Both top and bottoms
have a 9.2 Cal/cm2 ATPV rating. When worn in conjunction with the doublelayer
balaclava, it ensures maximum next-to-skin protection. All styles
incorporate red contrast FR thread and are presented in a sporty design for

optimum fit and comfort.
